Opportunity Information: Apply for EPA R5 GL2025 CWMP

The Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands Monitoring Program (GLCWMP) is a long-term initiative led by the EPA to monitor the health of coastal wetlands across the five Great Lakes. This effort helps fulfill the Clean Water Act's mandate to establish a system-wide surveillance network for assessing water quality in the Great Lakes. Given logistical and financial constraints, the program strategically monitors wetlands larger than 4 hectares (about 10 acres) that have a surface water connection to the lakes or their connecting rivers. Of the 1,014 wetlands meeting these criteria, around 200 are sampled annually on a rotating five-year schedule.

The program collects data on birds, amphibians, fish, macroinvertebrates, plant communities, and water quality, contributing to indicators that track wetland conditions. Since launching in 2011, GLCWMP has monitored over 1,000 wetland sites covering more than 400,000 acres. These wetlands are critical habitats supporting biodiversity and important ecological functions, yet over half have been degraded or lost in the past century. The initiative is supported by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) to guide conservation and restoration efforts.

The EPA is seeking applications for funding from entities capable of conducting field sampling and wetland condition analyses in alignment with GLCWMP protocols. This funding opportunity aims to continue monitoring efforts and provide vital data for assessing the quality and trends of coastal wetlands across the Great Lakes region. Eligibility details are outlined in Section 2 of the Notice of Funding Opportunity.
